Word and Music Studies: Ninth International Conference
August 7–10, 2013, London, UK

CALL FOR PAPERS

SILENCE, ABSENCE AND ELLIPSIS IN LITERATURE AND MUSIC

The International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA) takes pleasure in announcing its Ninth International Conference to be held in London from August 7–10, 2013. The conference will take place in Senate House, University of London, in association with the Institute of Musical Research and the Institute of English Studies, which are both institutes of the School of Advanced Study (https://www.sas.ac.uk).

Scholars active in all areas of Word and Music Studies are invited to participate in the London conference. In addition to papers addressing the conference theme, the conference will include two further sections: "Surveying the Field" and "Word and Music Studies Working Papers".

Previous conferences have been held biennially in Graz, Ann Arbor, Sydney, Berlin, Santa Barbara, Edinburgh, Vienna, and Santa Fe, with conference proceedings published in the Association's book series, Word and Music Studies (WMS). The Proceedings of the most recent conference in Santa Fe, Voice in Literature and Music, are due to be published early in 2013. It is anticipated that the Proceedings of the London conference will be published in a further volume of WMS.

As at former conferences, the "Surveying the Field" section will feature papers airing general theoretical and methodological questions intrinsic to the scholarly field of Word and Music Studies. Overviews of recent developments and new directions are welcome; however, papers in this area should not address specialised topics.

The "Word and Music Studies Working Papers" section will consist of shorter papers on any subject in the field of Word and Music Studies. Emerging and younger scholars are especially encouraged to present their work in this section to an expert audience. Successful papers will be invited to be published in the "Word and Music Studies Online Research" section of the WMA Online Newsletter.

Papers addressing the conference theme and "Surveying the Field" should be 30 minutes in length. "Working Papers" should be 20 minutes in length. Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words, and attach your current location and academic affiliation, via email to Walter Bernhart ( walter.bernhart at uni-graz.at) by 30 September 2012.

Members of the Programme Committee are Walter Bernhart (University of Graz, Austria), Michael Halliwell (University of Sydney, NSW), Suzanne Lodato (Indiana University, Bloomington, IN), and Robert Samuels (The Open University, UK).

The local organizers in London are Robert Samuels (Department of Music) and Delia da Sousa Correa (Department of English), of The Open University (Milton Keynes, UK). They are the convenors of The Open University Literature and Music Research Group ( https://www.open.ac.uk/Arts/literature-and-music/index.shtml) and its associated UK research network.
