Musicians
habitually describe music as being shaped, especially
when speaking of performance. This conference contributes
to the AHRC-funded Research Centre for Musical Performance
as Creative Practice and its project, based at King's
College London, on ‘Shaping Music in Performance' (www.cmpcp.ac.uk/smip.html),
and is organised in collaboration with the Institute
of Musical Research. The aim of the conference is to
explore, from as many perspectives as possible, relationships
between music and shape. Proposals for papers, sessions,
lecture-recitals, research reports, soft-/hardware demonstrations,
and posters will be welcomed from specialists in any
discipline from the sciences, social sciences, humanities,
engineering or performing arts that may be able to shed
light on the creation, perception or reception of music
(and especially musical performance) in relation to
shape. Following the conference, submissions will be
invited to an edited, peer-reviewed book on music and
shape.
Papers
should last 20-30 minutes, research reports 10 minutes,
and sessions 90 minutes. Lecture-recitals may last up
to 45 minutes. The deadline for conference proposals
is 19 December 2011. The conference programme will be
published in February 2012.
Submissions
should be made electronically in Word or PDF format
to daniel.leech-wilkinson at kcl.ac.uk. Please provide
your name, postal and email addresses, and any institutional
affiliation on the first page. Start your proposal on
the second page and write no more than 300 words. State
your audio-visual or other equipment or space requirements
after your proposal. All proposals should fully and
clearly describe the topic of the presentation and should

The Music
& Shape conference happens two weeks before the
start of the Olympic Games. Accommodation in or near
London will be hard to find and very expensive. 100
rooms have been reserved for the conference at Travelodge
Euston (£109 per night) and King's Cross (£99).
Please book as soon as possible via the Institute of
Musical Research (music at sas.ac.uk), and in any case
before 1 June 2012. No rooms can be booked after 1 June
2012.

The Art of Listening – Trends and Perspectives of a History of Music Listening

Since the mid-1990s and the publication of "Listening in Paris: A Cultural History" (1995), the path-breaking book by James Johnson, the history of music listening has been the focus of renewed interest in the fields of musicology, history and cultural studies. There have been a number of recent studies on music listening – as one among many forms of listening in modernity – that examine the act of listening in the concert within the broader context of music, social, cultural, and intellectual history.
This conference aims, first, to take stock of the current state of scholarship on music listening in the history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Second, its goal is to identify desiderata in the research on the history of music listening, to reflect on new methodological approaches, and to apply insights from a critical examination of the history of cultural practices to current discussions on music listening in the 21st century. The conference will address a broad spectrum of perspectives on the historicity of music listening in modern Europe and assess their relevance for recent developments.
Because music listening as a historical phenomenon is an amorphous object of study it cannot adequately be addressed with one research approach but requires trans-disciplinary cooperation among the historical disciplines of music, cultural, and media studies, history of science, and historical anthropology.
Proposals for contributions on the following themes are welcome:
1) Changes in the history of music listening: Looking at the longue durée in the history of music listening allows questions about the specificity of the changes in forms of listening.
2) Practices of music listening: This topic encompasses all practices of listening that are exercised in the concert hall: cultural staging of musical performances, preparations undertaken for the listening experience, verbal and nonverbal communication, and the emotional processing of the music listened to.
3) Composition and music listening: The relationship between musical texts and listening deserves new attention.
4) Music listening and new media: This theme deals with the relationship between music listening and technological innovations in recording, broadcasting, and reproduction.
5) Spaces of music listening: Music listening is anchored in local practices and traditions, but at the same time it is a global phenomenon.
We invite proposals for individual papers in German or English.

En 1959, Son Altesse Sérénissime le Prince Rainier III et le Directeur Musical de l´Orchestre, Louis
Frémaux, ont inauguré une saison estivale, qui, d´année en année est devenue le rendez-vous
obligé des amateurs de musique de provenance internationale. En juillet - août, le Prince accueille
dans la Cour d´Honneur du Palais, transformée en un lieu musical magique, les concerts de plein air
donnés par l´Orchestre entouré de prestigieux chefs et solistes.

Les Rencontres Internationales de l'Accordéon fêtent leurs 10 ans ! A cette occasion, le village de Saint Jeannet proposera deux concerts exceptionnels de Richard Galliano pour son nouveau projet Tangaria, le 12 juillet. Le lendemain, place au Trio Regis Gizavo, originaire de Madagascar, représentant par excellence de l'universalité géographique de l'accordéon. Des habitués du festival complèteront cette programmation : Aude & Guy Giuliano, et Lucien Galliano pour le traditionnel bal du 14 juillet.
Le célèbre accordéoniste a pris la direction artistique du Festival International d'Accordéon depuis maintenant 4 ans. Il a été le révélateur en France de la richesse musicale de l'accordéon, aux côtés d'artistes qui ont partagé sa passion : Nougaro, Barbara, Chet Baker, Michel Portal, Philip Catherine, Michel Petrucciani... et bien sûr Astor Piazzola ; mais il revient toujours à ses premiers amours, liés à son père, Lucien Galliano, qui partage l'affiche du festival : le bal populaire. Et comme cet instrument associé de manière indéfectible dans notre pays aux festivités populaires de la fête nationale, c'est logiquement le 14 juillet, sur la place de l'Église, que se clôturera la 10e édition du festival international !
Alors que l'accordéon n'avait jamais connu de soliste majeur, Richard Galliano est parvenu à imposer l'idée que cet instrument était digne de figurer aux côtés des saxophones et trompettes qui sont au coeur du Jazz. Inspiré par son ami Astor Piazzolla, Richard Galliano a permi à l'accordéon de se défaire de son image vieillotte, grâce à un travail sur le 3 temps, une autre conception rythmique et un changement des harmonies. D'une exceptionnelle polyvalence, il possède les moyens de s'exprimer dans n'importe quel contexte musical. "Les Étoiles de Nacre" ont donc, depuis les débuts, l'ambition de faire découvrir cet instrument emblématique, sous ses aspects autant traditionnels que novateurs, des cultures du monde.
Durant ces 3 jours, chaque soirée commencera dès 18h30 par des mini-concerts gratuits dans les rues et terrasses de Saint-Jeannet. Ces animations seront dirigées par Guy Dropsit, accordéonniste et musicien rompu à toutes les scènes. Les visiteurs pourront également jouir d'une prestation d'instruments proposée par la société Accordéons Sud-Est. À 20h30, rendez-vous sur la Place de l'Eglise pour profiter des soirées nocturnes…
