Retrospect and Prospect: Chinese Composers in the Age of Globalization

 

Call for Papers

Hong Kong, 4-7 December 2013 (Submission Deadline: 16 August 2013).

As part of the 2013 Chinese Composers Festival organized by the Hong Kong Composers Guild, this four-day symposium seeks to foster interaction among composers and scholars working on contemporary Chinese music across different disciplines and through a variety of approaches.

Keynote Speakers : Professor Nancy Yunhwa RAO (Rutgers University) ; Professor YU Siu-wah (The Chinese University of Hong Kong)

Retrospect and Prospect: Chinese Composers in the Age of GlobalizationSince the 1980s, composers of Chinese ethnic backgrounds have received increasing attention in both scholarship and the international music circuit; much of the focus has been on their attempts to mediate between Chinese and Western idioms, as well as the relationship between contemporary art and Chinese cultural identity against the backdrop of present-day globalization and trans-nationalism. With the theme of ¡§Retrospect and Prospect: Chinese Composers in the Age of Globalization,¡¨ proposals are invited on, but not restricted to the following:

* Globalization versus cultural identity

* New compositional approaches amongst Chinese composers

* Interaction between Chinese composers/musicians of different regions

* Dissemination of works by Chinese composers in the Digital Age

* Trends in commissioning Chinese composers by major ensembles/festivals/events

* Major genres and their compositional attributes

* Regional themes and styles as compositional impetuses

Submissions

Speakers will be given 20 minutes for their presentations, which will be conducted in English. Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent by 16 August 2013 to RhapsoArts Management: info at rhapsoarts.com. Each abstract should include its author's name, institutional affiliation, telephone number, and email address. The authors of selected papers will be informed via email by 15 September 2013 and a full paper must be submitted by 1 November 2013. Registration will begin in late October.

Giacomo Facco (1676-1753)

À nouveau un violoniste et encore un « produit d'exportation » que ce musicien qui, après ses années d'apprentissage à Venise, précéda Domenico Scarlatti en allant exercer ses talents à la cour d'Espagne. (+) lire la suite et écouter

 

Lorenzo Gaetano Zavateri (1690-1764)

Encore un virtuose du violon, cet élève de Torelli fut une des gloires de Bologne, sa ville natale. (+) lire la suite et écouter

 

Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello (1690-1758)

Né en Italie et nourri au lait de l'école vénitienne, cet autre violoniste s'en alla très tôt chercher fortune en Allemagne, d'abord à Munich, puis à Stuttgart où, jusqu'à sa mort, il occupa d'éminentes fonctions à la cour. (+) lire la suite et écouter

 

Giuseppe Valentini (1681-1753)

Celui-ci fut un violoniste virtuose et effectua toute sa carrière en Italie, entre Rome, Bologne et, pour finir, sa ville natale de Florence. (+) lire la suite et écouter

 

Antonio Caldara (1670-1736)

Ce Vénitien, violoncelliste de formation, voyagea beaucoup, y compris hors d'Italie, au cours d'une carrière qui culmina à Vienne où il fut nommé vice-maître de chapelle de l'empereur en 1716. (+) lire la suite et écouter
