Hearing Landscape Critically: Music, Place, and the Spaces of Sound

Landscapes are spaces of community and segregation, of inspiration, mystification, nourishment, and devastation. Though landscape has long been acknowledged as a foundational element of our historical and contemporary engagement with the world, the significance of sound and music in shaping notions and perceptions of landscape has only recently begun to receive sustained critical attention.

The third meeting of the ‘Hearing Landscape Critically' research network will take place at Harvard University, 14-16 January 2015. The aim of this three-year project funded by the Leverhulme Trust is to transform our sense of sound in landscape, and to document, investigate, and provoke critical encounters between the social and acoustic agents involved in the formations of landscape. The network embraces an interdisciplinary methodology and brings together scholars from diverse geographical contexts and academic fields (including art history, literary studies, and cultural geography) alongside creative practitioners, prompting new ways of thinking about sound, music, space, and place.

Key research objectives:

1. To investigate particular privileged or hidden sites and sounds of power, politics, coercion or subversion through landscape and music;

2. To explore the different modalities of performing/performed landscapes;

3. To interrogate the role of landscape, music, and sound in shaping subjectivity, social space, and the everyday;

4. To articulate the theoretical gains and ethical imperatives of encounters between landscape, music and society.

Le Concert de la Loge Olympique Salle Gaveau dans un programme Handel.

Après dix années de collaboration au sein du Cercle de l'Harmonie, Jérémie Rhorer et Julien Chauvin ont décidé de poursuivre leur activité musicale dans deux formations distinctes.

Pour sa part, Julien Chauvin entreprend de faire revivre, à l'aube de 2015, le « Concert de la Loge Olympique », un orchestre dirigé par le Chevalier de Saint-George, resté célèbre pour sa commande à Joseph Haydn des six symphonies dites « Parisiennes »

Inspiré du modèle anglo-saxon (de type Concerto Köln ou Freiburger Barockorchester), il s'agit d'un ensemble flexible et ouvert à des collaborations artistiques variées.

La premier prestation parisienne du Concert de la Loge Olympique aura lieu mercredi 14 janvier 2015 à 20h30, salle Gaveau., avec la soprano canadienne Karina Gauvin, dans un programme Haendel.

Le disque s'ouvre et se ferme en douceur, quasi acoustique comme dans beaucoup des expériences musicales auxquelles participe l'accordéoniste Vincent Peirani, entre autre avec Youn Sun Nah, Émile Parisien ou Michael Wollny. Mais les sept morceaux enchâssés entre ces deux miniatures ont une saveur fortement électrique, avec une basse (Julien Herné) et un Fender Rhodes (Tony Paelemen) bien installés, prolongés par divers effets, où l'accordéon chantant et le soprano rêveur se perdent ou se révèlent dans des volutes saturées.

Avec le compère de longtemps, Émile Parisien aux saxs (une plage au ténor Air Song #2) et Yoann Serra à la batterie, Vincent Peirani, révélation des victoires du jazz 2014, travaille avec son groupe depuis quatre ans. Voilà enfin leur premier disque. Un autre univers que celui déjà exploré jusqu'ici, et c'est réussi.
