The University at Albany's Performing Arts Center
will be hosting a two day symposium devoted to exploring
all aspects of Puerto Rican music on October 26 and
27, 2012.
The symposium will coincide with the 20th anniversary
conference of the Puerto Rican Studies Association also
being held on the campus of the University at Albany.
All scholars and performers interested in participating
in the symposium are cordially invited to submit e-mail
proposals for papers, panels, lecture/recitals, poster
and media presentations on all topics relevant to Puerto
Rican music including
The folk music of Puerto Rico: Bomba, Plena, Danza
Puertoriqueña
Classical music in Puerto Rico: Composers, Vocal
and Orchestral Music
Pablo Casals: his legacy and influence on the island's
musical life
Musical institutions in Puerto Rico: their history
and transformations
Puerto Rican music and identity
Proposals will be accepted until March 20, 2012.
Proposals should be submitted as a WORD or PDF file
attachment to mlifchitz at albany.edu indicating in
the subject heading "Puerto Rican Music Conference."
The first page of the proposal should include title,
author name(s), academic affiliation, contact information,
brief biographical information, and equipment/technical
needs (such as piano, stereo playback, computer and/or
overhead projector). A second page with a 250 word abstract
of the proposed presentation should follow.
Please note that individual papers will be limited
to 30 minutes. Panels (3-6 participants) will be limited
to 60 minutes. Lecture/Recitals will be limited to 60
minutes.

The University of Colorado at Boulder, Art Museum, College of Music, and Center for British and Irish Studies
To be held in conjunction with the CU-Boulder Opera's performances of TheRake's Progress and the CU Art Museum's exhibit, Hockney and Hogarth :
Selections from the CU Art Museum's Collection of British Art (featuringHockney's A Rake's Progress, 1961-63)
The program committee seeks papers relating to Stravinsky's music, Hogarth and Hockney's art, and/or Auden's and Kallman's libretto to The Rake's Progress.
The conference seeks to be interdisciplinary, and will consider relevant papersfrom the standpoint of music history, musical analysis, art and art history,
aesthetics, literary studies, and stagecraft. Papers will be limited to 20 minutes,
with ten minutes for further discussion.
Deadline for paper proposals: May 1, 2012
Notification for participation: June 15, 2012
Conference date: October 26-27, 2012
