Stedman Fabian

Baptisé le 7 décembre 1640 à Yarkhill

Fabian Stedman est issu d'une famille de pasteurs. Il est envoyé à Londres en 1655 pour apprendre le métier d'imprimeur chez Daniel Pakeman. Parallèlement il se fait connaître comme sonneur de cloches.

Il devient membre des Scholars of Cheapside, une société de carillonneurs, pratiquant à St Mary-le-Bow. Il en devient le trésorier en 1662.

Il semble que la société ait été dissoute, il rejoint en 1664, la Society of College Youths, renommée plus tard Ancient Society of College Youths. Il est délégué de la société en 1677, et Maître en 1681.

En 1670, il est clerc à St Benet de Londres.

Par la suite, il devient commissaire des douanes et de l'accise (taxes).

Il rédige ses dernières volontés le 17 octobre 1713.

Il est reconnu comme le fondateur de l'art de carillonner à partir de tables de chiffres pour les combinaisons possibles : avec trois cloches, il y a 6 combinaisons possibles. Avec 12 cloches, 479 001 600 combinaisons possibles dont l'exécution demanderait 30 années.
