Hawkins John
1719-1789

Né le 29 mars 1719, mort le 21 mai 1789.

Avocat, membre de l'Academy of Ancient Music, membre de la Madrigal Society.

Hawkins devait d'abord devenir architecte comme son père, mais il a prospéré dans le droit en tant qu'avocat.

Il épouse Sidney Storer en 1753, qui bénéficie d'un très important héritage à la mort de son frère en 1759. Hawkins cesse alors tout activité professionnelle.

En 1760, la famille déménage à Twickenham, et rédige un ouvrage sur la pêche, les rivières et les poissons : The Complete Angler ; Or, Contemplative Man's Recreation de Walton : Being a Discourse On Rivers, Fish-Ponds, Fish, and Fishing, trois ans plus tard, un ouvrage sur l'état des routes.

Après la commission de la paix en 1771, il est magistrat pour le comté de Middlesex. Il est fait chevalier en 1772.

En 1773, il fournit les notes pour une nouvelle édition des œuvres de Shakespeare.

Il a travaillé seize années à une Histoire générale de la science et de la pratique de la musique, qui a été publiée en 1776. Ce qui a inspiré au Dr Callcott une chanson moqueuse. Cet ouvrage a toutefois concurencé l'Histoire générale de la musique de Charles Burney (qui fut aussi critiquée) , avant d'être reléguée.
