Euler Leonhard
1707-1783

Né le 15 avril 1707 à Bâle, mort le 18 septembre 1783 à Saint-Pétersbourg.

Son père, Paul Euler (1670-1745), pasteur, qui entre neutres étudia avec Jean Bernoulli, le destine au ministère religieux. Euler suit des études de théologie et de langues orientales, il est également un des élèves de Jean Bernoulli et se lie d'amitié avec ses deux fils, Nicolas et Daniel, qui l'attirent à Saint-Pétersbourg.

iI est primé par l'Académie des sciences de Paris en 1724 pour son essai sur la théorie des marées.

Nicolas Bernoulli y meurt le 31 juillet 1726, son frère Daniel reprend la chaire de mathématiques à l'Académie des sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg, et laisse vacant celui de médecine et de physiologie, auquel Euler est nommé en 1727. En 1730, il y enseigne la philosophie naturelle. Daniel Bernoulli retourne à Bâle en 1733.

Le 7 janvier 1734, il épouse Katharina Gsell (1707-1773), fille d'un peintre et marchand d'art suisse, installé en Russie. Ils ont treize enfants, dont cinq survivants.

Euler perd l'usage d'un œil en 1735. L'année suivante, il publie son Traité complet de mécanique.

En 1741, il est professeur de mathématiques à l'Université de Berlin, puis directeur de la classe de mathématiques de l'Académie des sciences de Berlin.

Il publie en 1748, L'introduction à l'analyse des infiniment petits, en 1755, L'instruction du calcul différentiel.

En 1766, et réintègre l'Acadadémie des sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg.

De 1768 à 1770, il rédige Les institutions du calcul intégral.

En 1771, malgré une opération, il devient aveugle. Il dicte alors ses travaux et ses mémoires.

Son épouse décède en 1773, il se remarie avec sa belle sœur Salomé Abigaïl Gsell (1723-1794).

Il est le plus important mathématicien de son temps, mais aussi physicien, astronome, parmi ses ouvrages, on relève 886 titres.

La lettre à une princesse est un manuel complet de physique, écrit à la demande de la princesse d'Anhalt-Dessau.
