Barron Verulam
Né à Londres, 22 janvier 1561, mort à Highgate, en 1626.
Philosophe, juriste, homme d'État.
Son père, Nicholas Bacon (1509-1579) est Lord Keeper (Garde du Grand Sceau) pendant vingt ans. La famille est installée à Gorhambury.
Nicholas Bacon, son épouse Ann et leur fils aîné Anthony (ou Francis ?). Terres cuites peintes de 1566.
Francis Bacon est inscrit au Trinity College de l'université de Cambridge, avec son frère Anthony Bacon (1558-1601), en 1573. Le 27 juin 1576, il s'inscrit à Gray's Inn, une des quatre cours du barreau de Londres, mais en septembre, il est est dans la suite d'Amias Paulet, ambassadeur d'Angleterre auprès de la cour de France sous Henri III. Après le décès de son père, le 22 février 1579, il revient en Angleterre le 20 mars.
En 1581, il est élu au parlement. Le 27 juin 1582, il est reçu avocat à Gray's Inn.
En 1587, il est Reader à Gray's Inn. Il est consulté par le Conseil privé sur les affaires juridiques.
En août 1588, il est nommé au comité gouvernemental chargé d'examiner les requêtes, en décembre il est nommé au Conseil restreint de 16 avocats (quatre par cour) pour examiner les statuts du Parlement.
Le 4 février 1589, il est député de Liverpool et chargé de préparer un document officiel justifiant la politique religieuse de la Reine. Il est nommé le 29 octobre au poste de greffier de la Star Chamber. Il effectue sa première plaidoirie publique en 1591.
Le 19 février 1593, il est député du Middlesex, les 2 et 8 mars, il s'oppose à la demande de la Reine pour des taxes supplémentaires, il perd la faveur royale. Il est nommé en 1596 Conseiller extraordinaire de la reine, un poste honorifique.
Il publie en 1597 ses 10 essays, with Colours of Good and Evil, and Religious Meditations, qui auront plusieurs rééditions, révisions et augmentations, de son vivant. Il est député d'Ipswich le 18 octobre.
En mars 1599, il est l'avocat de l'accusation dans le procès de Robert Devereux, 2e comte d'Essex (son protecteur) qui doit répondre d'avoir signé une trêve avec l'ennemi irlandais et d'être revenu à Londres sans autorisation. Après le complot qu'il fomente pour renverser la couronne, Bacon est procureur de l'État dans le procès qui aboutit à la décapitation du comte d'Essex, à la Tour de Londres, le 26 février 1601.
Après la mort de la reine Élisabeth, en 1603, le règne de Jacques Ier, déjà roi d'Écosse, lui est plus propice. Il est nommé avocat ordinaire de la couronne le 18 août en 1604.
Le 10 mai 1606, il épouse Alice Barnham, fille d'un riche conseiller municipal de Londres.
Le 17 février 1607, il intervient au parlement en faveur de la naturalisation des citoyens écossais. Il est nommé solliciteur général le 25 juin.
En 1608, il est de nouveau greffier à la Star Chamber, il est par ailleurs nommé trésorier de Gray's Inn.
Sa mère décède en août 1609.
Il est nommé attorney général le 26 octobre 1613.
Le 25 mai 1616, il est procureur contre le comte et la comtesse de Somerset pour l'empoisonnement de Sir Thomas Overbury. Il est nommé conseiller privé le 9 juin.
Le 7 mars 1617, il est nommé garde des Sceaux, en janvier 1618, grand chancelier, le 12 juillet, il est créé Baron de Verulam. Le 27 janvier 1621, il est créé vicomte de St Alban.
Le 3 mai 1621, il est accusé par la Chambre des Lords d'avoir accepté des pots-de-vin, pour des concessions et des privilèges. Il est condamné en 1621 à être emprisonné dans la tour de Londres et à payer une amende de 40 000 livres sterling, il est privé de toutes ses dignités, exclu des fonctions publiques. Quelques jours plus tard, le roi le fait libérer et l'acquitte de son amende. Il se retire à Gorhambury.
En 1624, le roi le remet dans toutes ses dignités, mais Bacon ne revient pas aux affaires et se consacre à ses travaux philosophiques, qu'il n'a jamais abandonnés, malgré les charges qui le plaçaient souvent comme second du royaume après le roi. Ce dernier meurt le 25 mars 1625.
On prête à Bacon le fait d'avoir ouvert la voie à la science expérimentale, au moins est-il dans le mouvement. En politique, il est pour la gouvernabilité : paix sociale, tolérance religieuse, respect de l'athéisme. Il pense que la science résoudra les problèmes de la pauvreté ou du dénuement (voire un retour aux temps primordiaux du Paradis), qui sont cause de troubles sociaux.
