Il est issu d’une riche et puissante famille de Dublin établie au château de Drumcondra. Son père, John Bathe, est chancelier de l’Échiquier d’Irlande, sa mère Eleanor Preston, est la filme du 3e vicomte Gormanston. Son frère, John Bathe, sera représentant irlandais à la cour royale de Madrid au début des années 1600.
Il étudie à Oxford et reçoit une formation musicale. Il étudie également le droit à l’Inns of Court de Londres.
En 1585, il entre au service de John Perrot. Son père meurt en 1586.
Courtisan brillant il bénéficie des faveurs de la reine Elizabeth I, à laquelle il offre une harpe de sa conception. La reine lui accorde un certain nombre de concessions de terres, ajoutant ainsi aux vastes possessions des Bathe.
En 1591, il est en Espagne.
En 1595, il entre dans les ordres à Tournai. Il étudie à Saint-Omer et à Padoue et entre chez les jésuites de Tournai. En 1599, il est ordonné prêtre à Padoue, l’héritage familial passe à son frère John qui le suit en âge. Le fait d’être entré dans les ordres lève un doute quant à la loyauté des Bathe envers la couronne (un autre frère entre chez les Capucins) qui met fin aux faveurs royales.
En 1601, il est au service de Ludovico Mansoni, nonce épiscopal à la cour d’Espagne. Il dirige en 1604, le collège irlandais de Lisbonne. En 1605, il est à Valladolid et à Salamanque en 1606, où il dirige le collège irlandais (st Patrick) de l’Université.
Il a enseigné les langues et a écrit l’un des premiers ouvrages d’enseignement de la discipline, qui a été traduit en neuf langues.
