The Music Theatre Working Group at IFTR

July 6–10, 2026, Melbourne, Australia.

Deadline for Submission of Abstracts: December 8, 2025

For the IFTR conference in Melbourne, the Music Theater WG welcomes papers on any aspect of music theater broadly conceived, from opera and musicals to contemporary experiments. In keeping with the conference theme, we are also interested in a broad exploration of what music theatre does, especially in view of the specific properties and effects of music and sound. What knowledge does music theatre embody? What is its potential for renewal, regeneration, and reparation in specific geopolitical contexts, and for social and political change more generally? What are the limits of the various music theatre genres, and of the theoretical frameworks we use to approach them? In what ways does embodied movement inform and construct cultural and political meanings in music theatre?

We welcome full-length papers of up to 3000 words that will be distributed in advance. At the WG meetings during the conference, only a short overview of each paper will be presented (5–10 minutes) and the remaining time will be devoted to in-depth discussion (15–20 minutes). Full papers are to be submitted by June 25, 2026.

Abstracts of no more than 300 words are due December 8, 2025.
All abstract submissions are made through the IFTR webpage. Please note that you must renew your membership or become a member in order to submit.
