Royal Musical Association’s Southeast Asia Chapter 10th Anniversary Conference

8-10 May 2026, Singapore

Website

We are delighted to announce the call for papers for the Royal Musical Association’s Southeast Asia Chapter 10th Anniversary Conference, to be held jointly with (and at) the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts/University of the Arts, Singapore, from 8-10 May 2026.

Since its inception in 2015, the RMA Southeast Asia Chapter has fostered a vibrant community of scholars, educators, and musicians committed to advancing musicological research and practice in the region and beyond. This anniversary conference celebrates a decade of musical scholarship, practice, and collaboration, and aims to serve as a catalyst for research and creative exchange across Southeast Asia and internationally.

We welcome contributions across three core themes:

1.  Creative and Inclusive Music Pedagogies

This theme centres on transformative approaches to music teaching and learning.  How can music pedagogies address diverse needs and create inclusive spaces?  Topics may include, but are not limited to, creative pedagogies in response to AI, accessibility in music education, and new teaching methods that bridge cultural or socio-economic divides.

2. Global Musicology in Practice

How do we engage with music and dance across borders, traditions, and contexts?  This theme examines the practical application of global musicology, investigating how localised practices inform and are informed by international theoretical discourses.  Submissions may focus on methodological and/or ethical issues.

3. Performance and Performance Practices

How does performance function as a dynamic site of artistic, pedagogical, and research inquiry?  This theme welcomes practice-led contributions that consider performance in studio, rehearsal, classroom, and public contexts, particularly in Southeast Asia.  Submissions may explore performance as research and pedagogy, negotiations between tradition and innovation, culturally situated practices, and in relation to the role of technology in shaping musical identities and knowledge.
Under this heading, we also invite proposals for research-led lecture-recitals, short recitals and practical workshops aimed at tertiary-level practitioners, performers, university/college students, secondary level teachers and – for suitable activities – A Level Music pupils.

Submission Guidelines

We invite abstracts for individual papers, panels, workshops, lecture-recitals, and short recitals.  Proposals should indicate the theme addressed and include:

• Title

• Abstract (maximum 300 words)

• Short biography (maximum 150 words per presenter)

Please submit your proposal by 15 February 2026.  We aim to notify presenters selected by the end of February 2026.  There will be a limited number of student scholarships available – please indicate your interest in the submission form.  Selected papers may be considered for publication.

We look forward to your submissions and to celebrating a decade of vibrant musicological dialogue.

With best regards, RMA Southeast Asia Chapter Programme Committee
