Global Wagnerism
25 September 2026, St Andrews
University of St Andrews, 25 September 2026
Call for Papers
We invite scholars of all career stages to submit abstracts concerning the global legacy of Richard Wagner. The event aims to prompt conversation between centres and peripheries in Wagner research, as well as to widen perspectives on Wagner’s reception beyond Europe and North America. Papers on Wagnerism in Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America and Australasia are especially welcome. Another key theme is Wagner’s influence on neglected authorships and movements. Submissions may be comparative and interdisciplinary, addressing (for example) philosophy and critical theory, literature, musicology, film, and art history. They should share the aim of providing new and/or critical perspectives on the German nationalism associated with Wagner's work.
Please note that this is an in-person event only.
The study day will result in a peer-reviewed publication.
Please send a 250-word abstract as well as a 100-word biography to Adeline Heck
The deadline for submissions is 18 May 2026.
Organised by Adeline Heck (British Academy/University of St Andrews), Tim Anderson (British Academy/University of East Anglia) and David Evans (University of St Andrews).
