Alternative Rites. Regional Chant Traditions in Early Medieval Latin Europe

Call for Papers

The SCRIBEMUS team invites proposals for the international conference Alternative Rites. Regional Chant Traditions in Early Medieval Latin Europe, dedicated to the study of regional liturgical chant traditions and the role of music notations in their transmission. We welcome papers on non-Gregorian repertories, notation, liturgy, palaeography, codicology, digital approaches, and related topics. The conference will be held at the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage in Cremona on 3rd and 4th of December 2026 in a hybrid format*, allowing for both in-person and remote online presentation and attendance.

We invite proposals (250 words) for 20-minute papers to be sent to by the 15th of August 2026. Speakers will be notified by early September. Detailed submission guidelines and the thematic framework are available in the official Call for Papers on the conference webpage.

We are delighted to announce that Prof. Emma Hornby (University of Bristol) will deliver a lecture as invited keynote speaker.

This two-day conference is organized in the framework of the five-year ERC-funded project SCRIBEMUS: Scribes of Musical Cultures. Decoding Early Technologies of Music Writing in Latin Europe (ca. 900–1100) led by Prof. Giovanni Varelli at the University of Pavia.
