The Ninth Biennial International Conference on Analytical Approaches to World Musics

July 2026, Durham University, England

The year 2026 will mark the ninth installment of the Analytical Approaches to World Musics (AAWM) international conference series, and we are excited to announce that Durham University will host this landmark event. Building on the success of previous conferences, AAWM 2026 will continue to explore the rich and diverse musical heritages of the world through a broad array of theoretical, cultural, historical, psychological, empirical, informatics, and analytical perspectives. The conference provides a unique interdisciplinary and cross-cultural platform for scholars and musicians alike to engage with global musical traditions, both past and present.

Conference Themes and Format

AAWM 2026 will focus on fostering innovation in analytical methods and
encouraging dialogue between disciplines and cultures. The event will
highlight music that falls outside the traditional scope of European Art
Music, drawing attention to the diversity and complexity of global musical practices.

In lieu of traditional keynote lectures, AAWM 2026 will feature a dynamicschedule of special panel sessions, workshops, and discussion panels on a range of topics, including but not limited to:

The conference will be held as a hybrid event, offering both onsite and remote participation options, ensuring accessibility for a global audience.

Rob Schultz Junior Scholar Award

We are pleased to announce the continuation of the Rob Schultz Junior Scholar Award, which honors the memory of Rob Schultz, co-founder of the AAWM journal and conference series. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by graduate students and scholars within five years of receiving their PhD. The winner will have the opportunity to have their paper published in the *Analytical Approaches to World Music* journal and receive a cash prize of $1000 USD.

Call for Papers

A Call for Papers will be distributed in early summer 2025, with additional details and submission instructions available at that time. The conference website will also be launched at that point. We encourage scholars from all relevant fields and musical traditions to submit proposals and participate in this exciting event.
