Call for papers
International Symposium
Four hundred years ago, construction began on Eggenberg Palace in Graz. To mark this anniversary, the Steiermark Schau 2025 will showcase the residence and the history of its family from completely new perspectives. In collaboration with the Universalmuseum Joanneum Graz, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) is organizing an international symposium from October 16 to 18, 2025, which will focus on the music and theater culture in Eggenberg in the 17th century.
Although the rich musical and theatrical culture at the court of the Eggenbergs in Graz is only partially known today due to extensive losses of sources, there are many starting points for a comprehensive new examination of the personal relationship of the princes to music and theater, their musical education and the works dedicated to them, as well as the cultivation of music and theater at court. In particular, the following aspects can be considered: the influence of Jesuit and imperial music culture, connections between courtly and rural musical practices, the structure of the court chapel and its leading figures, confessional contexts, opera performances at court (libretti, stage machinery, costumes, etc.), and dedicated works (Giovanni Valentini, Heinrich Schütz, Stefano Landi, Pierre Gaultier, and Pietro Romolo Pignatta)
We explicitly invite submissions from young scholars working on topics related to the history of music and theater in the 17th century.
Proposals for topics for musicological and theater studies lectures with an abstract of max. 200 words can be submitted to the conference organizers Ass.Prof. Mag. Bernhard Rainer PhD and Univ. Prof. Dr. Klaus Aringer by April 15, 2025.
The decision and information about acceptance will be made by the end of April 2025; the conference languages are German and English. The papers will be published in a peer-reviewed Conference Proceedings.
Best wishes,
Bernhard Rainer and Kaus Aringer.
