10-12 December 2025, Grainger
Call for Papers
Grainger Symposium
Deadline: 30 June 2025
The music and fashion worlds have always been closely linked, with each exerting significant influence over the other. The intersections between these art forms occur in practically all genres and time periods: from costume designs for film, ballet and opera, from Bollywood to the Ballets Russes; partnerships between musicians and fashion houses, such as Maria Callas's collaborations with Yves Saint Laurent and Dior, the Sex Pistols with Vivienne Westwood, or Kanye West's Yeezys; musicians who themselves design and make clothing, such as Percy Grainger's towel outfits, the 'King of K-Pop' G-Dragon, or former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham; and performers who build their 'brand' around not only their musical works but also specific visual choices, including the Beatles' bowl cuts or Yuja Wang's Louboutins. This conference explores the intersections between fashion and music across time, intending to initiate productive discussion between scholars from both disciplines.
The Grainger Museum is pleased to host this symposium between 10 - 12 December 2025, which will be delivered in a range of formats, with some sessions in person at the Museum, and others fully online to accommodate a range of timezones.
