Call for Papers
The 2026 AMIS meeting will be held 27-31 May 2026 at the National Music Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota. The NMM is home to more than 14,000 musical instruments and is one of the largest and most prestigious collections of musical instruments in the world. It has been part of the University of South Dakota since the 1960’s, forming as a not-for-profit public museum in 1973. Now in its 52nd year, the NMM is in Vermillion, South Dakota, a small town recently hailed as the “Best Small Town Arts Scene In The Country” by USA Today.
The AMIS program committee invites proposals, due Friday, November 21, 2025, for paper presentations, roundtable panels, and lecture-recitals. Papers will be twenty minutes in length plus ten minutes for discussion; roundtable panels and lecture-recitals may request longer time slots. Advance approval is required for anyone wanting to use or discuss an instrument in the National Music Museum collection. To inquire about use of an instrument, email Michael Suing, Deputy Director of Collections.
Two copies of the proposal are required. Please send both copies as email attachments and at the same time. Acceptable formats are Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF. One copy should have an abstract of not more than 300 words, a 75-word biography for each presenter, a list of audio-visual or other requirements, and e-mail addresses for all presenters. The other should consist of only the abstract, with all personal details such as names, email addresses, and biographies removed. The abstracts will be considered by the program committee as blind submissions. Send proposals to program committee chair, Dr. Darryl Martin, Conservator, National Music Museum.
