24-26 October 2024, Barcelona
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona & Goethe-Institut, Barcelona
Deadline for proposals: 15th April 202
Convened by Dr. Diego Alonso (Univeristat Autònoma de Barcelona) and Dr. Peter Schweinhardt (International Hanns Eisler Society)
Hanns Eisler's relationship to the emotional in music was ambivalent. On the one hand, he often turned against music that emphasised expression and emotion, sometimes in general terms and sometimes with fierce polemics – which also showed him to be a child of his time and a consistent representative of his aesthetic and political environment. However, as much as he spoke out in favour of a rational enjoyment of art in terms of its social relevance and for a repression of the culinarily expressive in the name of gestural music ("Expression is impossible – that is, bombast"), large parts of his musical oeuvre are just as expressive: from expressive miniatures and character pieces, to his very specific contribution to Viennese espressivo, dramaturgically expressive "applied music" and inevitably not merely rational martial music, to the difficult compositional project of also finding new, unspent and unencumbered expressive nuances for the new era in the 1950s.
From 24–26 October 2024, the International Hanns Eisler Society, in cooperation with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Goethe-Institut Barcelona, is organising a confernce on issues of expression and emotionality in the work and aesthetics of Hanns Eisler and the musical cultures related to his work.
Possible topics include (among others):
- Emotion, feeling and affect in Eisler's music and musical thought
- Emotion and political impetus in Eisler's music
- Emotion and performance (body and voice): corporealities of emotions
- Reception: Emotional reactions to Eisler's music in Weimar Germany, in the exile, and in the GDR
Venue: Goethe-Institut Barcelona, c/ Roger de Flor, 224, 08025 Barcelona Conference languages: English and German
