Opera in Transnational Contexts

24th March 2023, Cardiff
School of Music, Cardiff University
Abstract submission Deadline: 13 February 2023

Keynote address: Professor Paulo Kühl, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil

In the last 15 years, an efflorescence of transnational approaches to opera and musical theatre has redefined the discipline of opera studies in important and complex ways. From historiographic periodisations and global and glocal geographies to questions of cultural, national and racial identities and the hybridities of performance practice and its texts, hardly any aspect of opera scholarship has remained unquestioned.

Recognising the major impact of transnational histories and methodologies on our understanding of opera as a cultural practice, our study day provides a platform to bring together early-career researchers, postgraduate students and established experts who currently work on any subject related to transnational opera.

Presentations will be welcome on a range of topics including, but not limited to:

Hybridities of operatic performance in transnational contexts;

Translations, adaptations, arrangements, parodies;

Stylistic influences and exchanges;

Geographies: global and glocal dimensions; centre and peripheries;

Networks of ideas: negotiating identity and gender;

Interactions and interconnections with popular genres;

Networks of people and goods: the influence on opera activity.

Abstracts for 20-minute papers (maximum 250 words) and short biographies (120 words) should be sent to Barbara Gentili by 13 February 2023, including the applicant’s institutional affiliation and contact details. The programme committee will communicate its decision by 24 February 2023.

The day will include a keynote address by Professor Paulo Kühl.

Depending on the outcome of funding applications, we may be able to waive any registration fee for attending the conference.

Programme Committee: Dr Barbara Gentili (Cardiff University), Professor Clair Rowden (Cardiff University), Professor Benjamin Walton (University of Cambridge).
