Monograph of an Artist. Man Music Culture

April 12-13, 2022, Poznań

On behalf of the Chair of Theory of Music at the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, I would like to invite you to participate in the 18th International Conference from the series "Musica practica, musica theoretica" ‒ Monograph of an Artist. Man ‒ Music ‒ Culture, which will be held on April 12-13, 2022 in the Presidential Hall of the Academy.

The basic issue ‒ one that often arises not only in musicological research, but also in cultural theory in general ‒ is the problem of the relation between the creator and his or her work. It seems that, bearing in mind the principle of methodological pluralism (C. Dahlhaus), it is the nature of this relation that will largely determine the choice of the research methodology. In recent years, however, we can observe an increased interest of researchers in composers whose works are described in the perspective of not only the relationship between man and work, but also in close connection with the history of local cultures and communities. This kind of research is part of microhistory, resulting in various biographies, bios, biographical features, etc.

Within the framework of the conference deliberations we will therefore look forward to topics presenting monographic research on the one hand and purely methodological considerations on the other. The most important problem areas arising in the context of writing monographs, which may provide a framework for the proposed topics, are:

• types of creator-work relations in the perspective of the choice of historiographic method,

• cultural, musical, and biographical analysis - balancing the three perspectives,

• monographic creativity in methodological perspective,

• a methodology for conducting unit research within the framework of so-called microhistory,

• presentation of original research with particular emphasis on justification of the chosen method,

• a work caught between the creative individual and the cultural context,

• popular science monograph.

The presentation of the paper including musical examples should not exceed 20 minutes. The conference languages are Polish and English, but the presentation of the paper in Polish should be accompanied by a presentation in English or a translated paper, delivered to the organizers by March 8, 2022.

Conference participants are offered lodging, meals, and a modest remuneration. We kindly ask you to apply for participation in the conference (in Polish and English) and to submit:

• the title of the paper,

• a biographical note (up to 300 characters),

• an abstract of the paper (up to 2000 characters), by January 30, 2022.

Once you are informed - by February 10, 2022 – about being accepted as a conference participant, please pay - by February 28, 2022 - the conference fee of 300 PLN to the account of the Academy: BZ WBK S.A. VI O/POZNAŃ 66 1090 1362 0000 0000 3601 7907
