Antonín Dvořák and opéra

4 and 5 November 2021, Prague
workshop

The National Museum ; the Antonín Dvořák Museum cordially invite you to a workshop dedicated to the operatic oeuvre of Antonín Dvořák, to take place on 4 and 5 November 2021 at the Czech Museum of Music, Karmelitská street 2/4, Prague 1.

Developments in the operatic genre of the second half of the nineteenth century can be traced out by considering Dvořák’s own extensive legacy in the genre, comprising a total of eleven operas. Through them we can observe several elements: the stance of Czech society towards national and folk subjects, the adoption of German, Italian and French models, the problem of libretti, the range of critical reception, aspects of stage production and musical preparation as well as practical and operational facets of the theatre. Contributions are welcome centred on various features of any of Dvořák’s operas, as are papers on subjects drawn from the wider context of the operatic repertory of the second half of the nineteenth century.

The official languages of the workshop will be English, German and Czech. Contributions should be of fifteen minutes’ duration, with a further ten minutes available for discussion. Participants may present their contributions in person at the Czech Museum of Music or online via Zoom.

Proposals for contributions, comprising an abstract (of max. 250 words) and brief biography, should be sent to Veronika Vejvodová at veronika.vejvodova@nm.cz, by 31 August 2021 at the latest.
