Archiving cultural objects of contemporary history plays an increasing role in current research. This includes also a constant reflection of the handling of archives, their structures, and their accessibility.
Archiving music that involves digital technologies causes additional challenges for institutions, libraries and archives, ranging from providing server facilities and maintaining hard- and software to questions of systematizing the now divers, partly digital sources. How can and should these new sources be preserved and archived? Who selects the sources that are maintained? Who takes care about maintaining the accessibility of the archived sources? How is archiving digital media influenced by legal issues? How do other research fields such as media studies, film studies or game studies deal with those questions? And how is archiving music related to the new developments in digital music editions?
AREM2020 brings together international researchers from different fields and backgrounds to discuss questions concerning archiving and re-performing electro-acoustic music, computer music and digitized music, as well as share approaches and knowledge on preserving digital media.
In response to COVID-19, this year’s second edition of AREM was transformed into a hybrid format, taking place simultaneously in Dresden and online on Zoom. For participating: please register to get the access link. Registration is free of charge.
