The Midwestern Graduate Music Consortium (MGMC) invites the submission of abstracts and scores for our 2018 conference, which will be held April 26-27th, 2018 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. MGMC is a joint venture organized by graduate students from the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Northwestern University that encourages the presentation of original research and the composition of new music by graduate and advanced undergraduate students. While we will consider all submissions that generally address music, this year's meeting will focus on the theme “Music and Intersectional Thought.” Building on Kimberley Crenshaw's foundational work on the intersection of racism and sexism, this conference aims to consider what can intersectional thought bring to music studies, and in turn what music studies can bring to intersectional thought. In short we ask: what the interlocking and intersecting forms of power that shape our musical experiences and how music speaks back to these demands? This conference will feature paper presentations, a concert, a keynote talk by Professor Olivia Bloechl (University of Pittsburgh), and a discussion workshop led by Professor Alisha Jones (Indiana University). 

Abstracts due January 26th, 2018 by 5 p.m. Notification of selection will be sent out around the end of February.
