October 9–12, 2019, Bonn
Venue: Beethoven-Haus, Bonn
Submission deadline: November 20, 2018
The international symposion focuses on Bernstein’s musical poetics and his ethetic reflections on music: not only as echoed in his writings (explicit poetics), but also in his artistic output (as composer, conductor, pianist), in his educational output (Omnibus, Young People’s Concerts), and last but not leat in his musical films (implicit poetics). A host of aspects comes to mind here. For example, his concept of ecelecticism, the relation of music/society/politics, tonality/atonality, jazz, self-borrowings, music and language, the influence of figures like David Prall, Marc Blitzstein and Ernst Bloch (”The Principle of Hope“), the issues of genre hybrids and the theatricality of his music, his Beethoven reception/interpretation, and strategies of compositional form (variation, ambiguity, quotation, etc.)
The symposion is organized by the Institut für Musikpädagogik der Universität zu Köln and will be held jointly with the Beethoven-Haus (Bonn) and Radio Jazz Research e. V.
