Dominicans and the Liturgy in Medieval

April 5-6, 2019, Paris
Call for Papers
Reid Hall, 4 Rue de Chevreuse, 75006 Paris

After arriving in Paris in the early 13th century, Dominican friars became embedded in Parisian intellectual, cultural, and religious life.  At the Priory of Saint-Jacques, in the midst of their study and prayer, the Dominicans were at the forefront of Parisian developments in theology, liturgy, and manuscript production. In this conference, we will consider the development of Dominican liturgical practice in medieval Paris, exploring both the Dominican liturgy in itself and its connections to theology, book history, and related areas.

20-minute paper submissions are welcomed on any topic related to the conference theme. Possible topics include studies of individual Dominican manuscripts with a Parisian connection (including the exemplar manuscripts Rome, Santa Sabina, XIV L1 and London, British Library add. 23935); comparison of Dominican liturgical practices with other liturgical traditions in medieval Paris; and consideration of the influence of liturgy on Dominican sacramental theology.

Submit abstracts of 500 words by email to the conference organizers, Susan Boynton (slb184 -at- columbia.edu) and Innocent Smith, OP (innocent.smith -at- opeast.org) by December 1, 2018.
