The University of Florida Student Society for Musicology (SSM) will host a graduate student research symposium titled “Intonations: Music Near and Distant” on March 24 and 25, 2017 at the University of Florida School of Music in Gainesville, Florida.
The musicologist and composer Dr. Manfred Stahnke, from Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, Germany, will deliver the keynote presentation. This event will also feature a concert dedicated to Professor Stahnke's music on Friday evening, March 24.
We invite you to submit abstracts for musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory presentations on any topic related to Western Art, popular, and folk musical traditions. These could include
historical and philosophical aspects
technological and medial aspects
social and ritual aspects
intonation practices and tunings
microtonality and tone systems
harmonic series and scales
rhythmical practices
The presentation format will be a twenty-minute paper, followed by a ten-minute discussion. Please submit abstracts of maximum 250 words, demonstrating a clear statement of topic, argument, and your research methodology.
Submissions should include the following information, which is not part of the word count, in an attached document:
1. Title of paper
2. Name, institutional affiliation, and degree program
3. Email address
4. Audio-visual requirements
