Sounding Czech: Towards an Aural History of Bohemia and Moravia

The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at New York University and New York University Prague are seeking papers addressing the role of sound and aurality in the histories of Bohemia and Moravia. This two-day interdisciplinary graduate conference, to be held at NYU Prague, bridges musicology, history, literary and film studies, and oral history, and will be based around the following questions: What is the role that sound has played at different moments in the histories of Bohemia and Moravia? What is the relationship between sound and music in a Czech context? How can closer attention to the sonic dimensions of historical experience change our understandings of Czech culture and history? In what ways does the aural contribute to historical knowledge?

This conference invites papers from a range of disciplines which consider, among other topics, Czech modes of sound transmission and audio technology, the political uses of sound or music in a Czech context, the historical investigation of sites and moments in which sound or music has played an important role, the role of voice and voicelessness in Czech culture and history, and language as a form of sound. Interdisciplinary approaches and the incorporation of performance and/or multimedia are encouraged.

Keynote speaker: Professor Michael Beckerman (NYU).

The language of the conference is English. Submissions should include a 300 word abstract and a CV. Applications from graduate students and early career researchers are particularly encouraged. The deadline for applications is April 17, 2015. Notification of acceptance will be made before May 18, 2015.
