Landon Howard Chandler Robbins
1926-2009

Né là Boston le 6 mars 1926 ; mort à Foncoussières (Tarn), le 20 novembre 2009.

Entre 1943 et 1945, au Swarthmore College, en Pennsylvanie, il étudie  la théorie musicale avec Alfred Swan, le composition avec Harl McDonald, la littérature anglaise avec W.H. Auden. De 1945 à 1947, à l'Université de Boston, il étudie la musique avec Karl Geiringer and Hugo Norton. Il est Music Bachelor en 1947. Il travaille alors, jusqu'en 1949, comme critique musical pour divers journaux, aux états-Unis, et en Europe, où il s'installe : Grande-Bretagne, France, Pays-Bas et Autriche.

Il fonde en 1949, la Haydn Society, dont il est le secrétaire général de 1949 à 1951. Cette institution planifie une édition monumentale des œuvres de Haydn.

En 1955, il publie The Symphonies of Joseph Haydn,

Il publie le « Haydn Yearbook » depuis le premier numéro en 1962. Il est, en 1969, professeur de musique au Queens College, à New York, puis en 1970,  à l'Université de Californie à Davis.

Entre 1976 et 1980, il publie les cinq volumes de son œuvre majeure, Haydn Chronicle and Works.

De 1978 à 1993, il enseigne à l'Université de Cardiff, au Pays de Galles, il est associé, en 1979, au collège  Lady Margaret Hall d'Oxford.

Il est docteur honoris causa de l'Universités de Boston en 1969, de l'Université royal de Belfast en 1974, de l'Université de Bristol en 1981, et du Conservatoire de la Nouvelle Angleterre en 1993.

Il a également écrit sur mozart, et en général sur les sources autrichiennes du XVIII^e siècle.
