Hebrew Melodies: Music and the Bible in Nineteenth-Century Europe

25-26 juin 2014, King's College London

CFP deadline: Friday 16 Jan 2015
musicinlondon.org

The idea that 19C musicians drew inspiration from the Bible is uncontroversial. Yet insufficient attention has been paid to the relationship between the contemporary transformations in religion, music, history, archaeology and biblical scholarship in nineteenth-century Europe. This conference will initiate an interdisciplinary discussion between scholars of music, cultural history, literature, theology and biblical scholarship, with the aim of revealing points of intersection and exchange between these disciplines and activities in the long nineteenth century.?

Topics may include but are not limited to:

-    Musicology and biblical criticism
-    Hymns and sacred music
-    Biblical opera and oratorio
-    Music aesthetics and the sacred
-    Psalms
-    Education and worship
-    Study of ancient music
-    Poems, ballads and Lieder
-    Religion and popular music
-    Choirs and choral societies
-    Religious music and the emotions
-    Performers and performance spaces
-    Biblical musicians/composers (David, Solomon, Moses, Miriam &c.)

The conference will be in a workshop format and consist of a series of roundtable discussions of pre-circulated papers. Proposals (300 words max.) for 3,000-5,000 word papers should be sent to Brian Murray (bhm26 at cam.ac.uk) and James Grande (james.grande at kcl.ac.uk) by Friday 16 January 2015. Participants will then be expected to submit a draft of their paper by Monday 1 June 2015.

This event is a collaboration between the ERC-funded research projects ‘The Bible and Antiquity in Nineteenth-Century Culture' at the University of Cambridge and ‘Music in London, 1800-1851' at King's College London.

Cities in Medieval France : 12th Annual Symposium of the International Medieval Society, Paris

Call for Papers

25-27 juin 2015, Paris

Dates: 25 -27 June 2015, Paris, France (Université de Paris I)

Deadline for Abstracts: 30 January 2015

Keynote Speakers: Emma Dillon (King's College, London), Carol Symes (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), and Boris Bove (Université Paris VIII).

The International Medieval Society, Paris (IMS-Paris) invites abstracts and session proposals for our 2015 interdisciplinary symposium on the theme of cities in Medieval France. This symposium will approach new lines of investigation that will deepen our knowledge of medieval cities (11th – 15th centuries) not only in their cartographic and monumental dimensions, but also political and cultural ones. In particular, we welcome proposals that discuss the uses of city space and their performative function. For instance, the role of rituals and urban processions, and how music and theater contribute to the establishment of urban space in its practical use and representations. Proposals should focus on France between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. We encourage proposals and papers from all areas of medieval studies, such as musicology, anthropology, archeology, history, economic and social history, art history, gender studies, literary studies, philosophy, etc.

Proposals of 300 words or less (in English or French) for a 20-minute paper should be e-mailed to communications.ims.paris at gmail.com no later than 30 January 2015. Each should be accompanied by full contact information, a CV, and a list of audiovisual equipment you require.

Please visit our website: https://www.ims-paris.org for full instructions and the full call for papers.
