Wotton William
1666 - 1727

Né le 13 août 1666, mort le 13 février 1727. Il est le second fils du révérend Henry Wotton, recteur de Wrentham dans le Suffolk.

La postérité a fait de lui un enfant prodige, lisant la Bible, le latin, le grec et l'hébreu avant l'âge de huit ans.

En avril 1676, il est admis au à Catharine Hall de Cambridge, où il est diplômé en 1679. Il y aurait acquis l'arabe, le syriaque, le chaldéen, la logique, les mathématiques, la philosophie et l'histoire.

Ses parents meurent alors qu'il est encore à Cambridge. Il est engagé dans la maison de Gilbert Brunet qui sera l'évêque de Salisbury.

Il est boursier au St John's College, où il obtient une maîtrise en 1683 et le doctorat en 1691.

Après son ordination, il est chapelain de Daniel Finch, comte de Nottingham.

En 1686, il est nommé curé à Brimpton dans le Berkshire. En 1687, il est membre se la Royal Society.

En janvier 1689, il est nommé vicaire à Lacock dans le Wiltshire et démissionne en 1693, année où Daniel Finch lui obtient le rectorat de Daniel Finch dans le Buckinghamshire.
