Né à Southwark en 1641, mort en juin 1707 à Hampstead.
Il effectue ses études à Eton et au collège de Peterhouse à l'université de Cambridge
En 1669, il devient recteur de St George Botolph Lane, à Londres, et en 1681, il est nommé chanoine à la cathédrale Saint-Paul.
En 1674, il montre son goût pour la controverse par des attaques contre le puritain John Owen dans The Knowledge of Jesus Christ and Union with Him.
En 1684, il publie The Case of Resistance of the Supreme Powers stated and resolved according ti the Doctrine of the Holy Sriptures, un habile traité par lequel il fait la distinction entre l'obéissance passive et active, qui étaient en ce temps là généralement acceptées par le haut clergé. La même année, il est nommé Maître [prêtre] du temple.
En 1686, il est rappelé à l'ordre après un prêche antipapal, et sa pension est supprimée.
Après la « Glorieuse Révolution »1, il est suspendu pour avoir refusé de prêter serment à William [Guillaume] et Mary, mais avant son renvoi définitif, il ccède en justifiant son changement d'attitude par un cas d'allégeance due au pouvoirs souverains, il s'en explique dans Scripture and Reason and the Principles of the Church of England (1691).
Au cours de sa mise à pied, il a rédigé Practical Discourse concerning Death, qui devient un ouvrage populaire.
En 1690 et 1693, il publie des livres sur la doctrine de la Trinité, qui ont plus aidé que desservi la cause des Socinian2, ce qui provoque une vive polémique avec Robert South et d'autres.
Il est doyen de Saint-Paul en 1691.
Ses sermons ont été rrecueillis en 2 vol. In-8 (4e éd., 1755).
1. Mouvement qui suite à l'invasion hollandaise menée par Guillaume III duc d'Orange, entrâina le chute du roi Jacques VII d'Écosse au profit de l'accession au trône de sa fille Marie II et son époux, Guillaume III.
2. Groupe religieux constitué en Pologne au milieu du xvie siècle, aet principal apport au mouvement unitarien ou antitrinitaire. Tausto Sozzini (Faustus Socinus, 1539-1604), théologien italien installé en Pologne en sera le plus important théoricien, et lui donnera son nom.
SHERLOCK, WILLIAM (c. 1641-1707), English divine, was born at Southwark about 1641, and was educated at Eton and at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. In 1669 he became rector of St George's, Botolph Lane, London, and in 1681 he was appointed a prebendary of St Paul's. In 1674 he showed his controversial bent by an attack on the puritan John Owen, in The Knowledge of Jesus Christ and Union with Him. In 1684 he published The Case of Resistance of the Supreme Powers stated and resolved according to the Doctrine of the Holy Scriptures, an ably written treatise, in which he drew the distinction between active and passive obedience which was at that time generally accepted by the high chuich clergy; in the same year he was made master of the Temple. In 1686 he was reproved for his anti-papal preaching, and his pension stopped. After the Revolution he was suspended for refusing the oaths to William and Mary, but before his final deprivation he yielded, justifying his change of attitude in The Case of the Allegiance due to Sovereign Powers slated and resolved according to Scripture and Reason and the Principles of the Church of England (1691). During the period of his suspension he wrote a Practical Discourse concerning Death, which became very popular. In 1690 and 1693 he published volumes on the doctrine of the Trinity which helped rather than injured the Socinian cause, and involved him in a warm controversy with Robert South and others. He became dean of St Paul's in 1691, and died at Hampstead in June 1707.
