International Arnold Schönberg Symposium

The Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna is hosting an international symposium in cooperation with the Center for Research on Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School at the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Vienna from October 17–19, 2019.

The symposium will be devoted to the sketches of the Viennese School. Particular focus will be given to the compositional sketches of Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern during both the transitional period around 1908/09 and during the early stages of composition with twelve tones which are related only with one another between 1921 and 1924.

For the open panels, independent submissions on Arnold Schönberg’s compositional sketches or other current research on Schönberg are also welcome.

The symposium offers scholars the opportunity to present their research findings in a 20-minute lecture. The lectures may be in German or English. Selected papers as well as independent articles will be published in the Journal of the Arnold Schönberg Center 17/2020.
