Carlo Broschi Farinelli (1705-1782): The Career, Skills and Networks of a Castrato Singer

Carlo Broschi Farinelli (1705-1782) was one of the most important Italian singers of the first half of the 18th century and a leading figure in the advancement of the vocal “new style” (as defined by Charles Burney), a musical and poetic/dramaturgical taste that captivated European audiences following the Venetian opera season of 1725/6.

This international conference aims to rethink and provide fresh insights into Farinelli’s expe­rience as a performer and cultural/artistic promoter, with special attention to his activity in Italy, Austria and Spain.

Proposals for papers are particularly welcome on the following and related topics:

Ø  Farinelli’s vocal skills (sources, analysis, and improvisation), his output as a composer, and his abilities in the fields of set design, staging, and stagecraft;

Ø  Farinelli’s favoured dramatic and vocal roles, and how composers and poets dealt with them;

Ø  Farinelli’s Spanish period, with special attention to the Spanish sources, his institutional roles at court, and his relationship with artists such as Giacquinto, Amigoni, Bonavia Battaglioli and musicians such as Porretti, Herrando, Castellini et al.;

Ø  Farinelli’s relationships with patrons, sponsors and religious institutions;

Ø  Farinelli’s iconography;

Ø  Farinelli’s reception.

The official languages of the conference is English. Papers in German, Dutch and Italian will be also accepted.. Proceedings will be published in English only.
