The Paths of Musicology

Call for Papers

14-17 sept. 2016, Mayence

The 'Gesellschaft für Musikforschung' is accepting proposals for papers for its 16th international conference until 31 January 2016.

The conference will be held in Mainz at the Johannes Gutenberg-University and the Academy of Sciences and Literature between 14 and 17 September 2016.

The theme of the conference is ‘The Paths of Musicology'.

Investigation into the history of musicology as a subject has gained strong interest in the last two decades.  Therefore, the conference organizers wish to host a forum that focuses on the perceptions and discourses of musicology's past and future as an academic discipline (within and outside the university). Based on the new research into personnel and institutional structures (individual protagonists, networks, hierarchies, generations, etc.) this conference's focus is on questions of the discipline's respective traditions and emerging tendencies in curriculum, research focuses and fields of interest, questions, methodologies and lines of inquiry .  Papers discussing the prospective paths of musicology regarding content, methods, media, and technical developments are particularly welcomed.

Proposals should convey an impression of the diversity of current musicological research and, therefore, do not necessarily need to be bound explicitly to the conceptual framework of the conference.  Proposals can be sent for individual papers of 20 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion, as lecture recitals of 30 minutes, or poster presentations.  Abstracts should present the scope of the presentation in a maximum of 250 words, clearly stating the presentation type (individual paper, lecture recital, poster presentation), required A/V equipment, and contact information.

Please send applications by email to gfm2016 -at- uni-mainz.de no later than 31 January 2016.

Unfortunately the conference organizers are unable to offer any financial support.

The conference languages are German and English.
